Is This the Coolest Vintage Golf Cart Ever Made?

The Red Legend Lives: Driving History at CSC Motorcycles

If you’ve visited CSC Motorcycles over the years, you probably recognize the vintage red machine that spent years perched high on a ledge in our old showroom. It wasn’t just a static display; it’s a rare, 1956 McCulloch Golf Pony, and we’re excited to share that this piece of mid-century engineering isn’t just for show—it still runs.

A "Sports Car" That Refuses to Retire

While most golf carts from the 1950s were clunky, "tipsy" three-wheelers, Robert P. McCulloch—the engineering genius behind the famous chainsaws—decided to "throw away the book." He designed the Golf Pony to be the "sports car of the fairways," featuring four-wheel stability, a low center of gravity, and a specialized electrical control system.

With its low center of gravity and four-wheel stability, it was built to handle the steepest hills—even the famous 45-degree slopes of the Ojai Country Club!

The owner has had this Pony in his collection for years, and unlike many vintage finds, this one hasn't lost its spark. Seeing it drive around the shop today is a testament to the "over-engineered" philosophy that McCulloch brought to every project.

Vintage Power: The Original Charger

One of the most impressive parts of this setup is the original heavy-duty charger that came new with the cart. It’s a rugged piece of power tech that still does its job decades later. In an era where electric vehicles were a novelty, McCulloch was already perfecting the "direct gear drive" (no chains or belts to slip!) and automatic brakes that still function on our unit today.

The Visionary: Robert P. McCulloch

The man who built this cart didn't just stop at golf courses. Robert Paxton McCulloch was a titan of industry who thought on a massive scale:

Innovation That Lasts

Whether it’s a 1950s electric cart or a modern CSC motorcycle, the goal has always been the same: providing reliable, fun, and smartly engineered transportation. Having this red Pony in our shop reminds us every day that great ideas—and great machines—never truly go out of style.
